About the organisation

In 2002, the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) launched the Community Addicitons Management Programme (CAMP). It was a 5-year programme which aimed to provide comprehensive services for addiction problems. As a pilot programme, CAMP was able to treat 1000 patients per year, representing a fraction of the estimated number of individuals requiring treatment. With the support of the Ministry of Health, the National Addictions Management Service was set up in 2008 with the intention to meet the growing demand of individuals requiring treatment, especially for problem gambling. Under NAMS, IMH is tasked to build on CAMP’s existing infrastructure and capabilities to meet this high demand for addiction treatment services.

They help behavoural addicts and substance addicts overcome their addiction and recover. Some of these services includes:

• Assessment and treatment of addictive disorders by a multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, counsellors, psychologists, and social workers

• Individual, group and family therapy

• Public education talks

• Training for health care and social service professionals

• Community liaison to develop services and programmes

• Addictions Research

People who thinks they are addicts either in behaviour or substance should visit them to get rid of their addictions.

Current Situation

Their current website could be improved. There are too much words to begin with and i feel that they should add abit more pictures to spice things up. Other then that the colour of the website is vibrant which emits a plesant feel.  Its not too bright nor too dull thus making it the right choice of colour. So far there hasnt been any training/public talk updates yet and i feel that they should keep the website updated with the latest informations. There are several other similar organisations such as National Council on Problem Gambling, Central Narcotics Bureau, Alcohol Anonymous Singapore, Credit Counselling Singapore, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and National Council of Social Service are some of the similar organisations. I feel that they could improve by reaching out to more people via media tools such as facebook, twitter etc. People who needs help will know where to find them given the information presented.

1. What kind of customer value does YouTube provide in the market place?

Youtube enables customer to ‘just watch’ the video as what customers plan to do when visit a video sharing site. Other video sharing sites are troublesome. What i mean by that is customers need to download special software to view the videos. Unlike them youtube uses a software that could be found in almost every single computer. Thus enabling customers to view videos without the hassel of downloading sofwares. Customers also need not become a member to view the videos. It is more like a drive without going through a toll. It is quick and easy. Visit and view.

2. How do businesses like YouTube alter the ways that organisations and customers interact?

Youtube has made a big impact in how organisations and customers interact. Millions or even billions of people from all over the world are visiting Youtube. Organisations are posting ads and even movie trailers to reach out to their customers. The larger the audience, the more people will view their ads. Thus more and more organisations are turning to youtube. Viewers can also ‘grab’ a video from the website and post it up in their blogs for example. This will provide a higher view rate. Viewer can be critiques too and comment or rate about the video. This will tell other viewers if the video is worth to watch.

3. What are the challenges facing YouTube in the future?

There are several challenges that Youtube will be facing in the future. One of which are competitions that arises following youtube’s success. Many video streaming websites are launched to be better then youtube. Metacafe for example post videos that are only ‘acceptable’. By saying acceptable i mean in terms of quality of the video. Clips are analysed before being posted up on the website. Also duplicates are rejected so you wont find two of the same videos. Not only youtube face stiff competition but also youtube face major legal issues over copyright matters. Youtube faces a tough future since there are many trying to ‘gun it down’.

Speaker: Lionel Chin

Age: 25

Profession: Co-founder of RippleWerkz

Website: http://www.ripplewerkz.com/

5 keypoints that he mentioned were:

1) Take up a freelance job to get the feel of how work life is.

2) A good portfolio means higher chances of getting a job.

3) Having a good attitude plays an important role in maintaining a good relationship with your colleagues.

4) Use up every tool in your arsenal to expand your business. Tools such as Twitter or Facebook etc.

5) Have some dignity in your work and give the best so people will remember you for your work in the future.

3 things i was inspired by:

1) The speaker.

He answered every question without any doubts and is very knowledgeable in his field.

2) The presentation

The presentation is very neat and organised and it doesnt confuse me. I didnt have a hard time spotting the points he was talking about.

3) Working life

After he explained how working life was i had a rough idea of how tough it is gonna be. It kinda motivates me to study hard and know my stuffs well in detail.

Having a guest speaker to share with us is a great opportunity as i feel that they have gone through it all and has ample amount of knowledge to share with all of us. He can share with us things that are not directly related to the job such as having the right attitude to get along with your colleagues. No only that he can also tell us important tips to ‘survive’ in the working life. I feel that that is very important as to me, eventhought how good you are at your job, if you dont have a good working relationship with your colleagues then might as well find another job. Thus i feel that having a guest speaker is better comparing to reading it up online or just teaching it by book.

I decided to choose children society as i feel that every children needs a proper upbringing. Without someone to guide them, they will feel lost in this world. Thus i feel that this organisation is very important to lend a helping hand to all the helpless children in Singapore. Want to know more about this organisation? Here’s their brief introduction about themself.

At Singapore Children’s Society, we help protect and nurture children and youth of all races and religions, especially those who are abused, neglected, and/or from dysfunctional families. Each year we reach out to about 46,000 children, youth and families in need.

Established in 1952, the needs of our children have changed over the years. Since then, our services have evolved to meet their needs. Today, we operate islandwide to broaden our reach via the six service categories of: Caregiving, Preventive, Developmental, Remedial, Community and Public Education.

Our Core Values

  • Compassion & Caring
  • Commitment
  • Professionalism
  • Integrity
  • Openness to Change

Our Accolades

  • Winner, Singapore Prestige Brand Award 09 – Special Merit
  • NVPC Best Non-Profit Organisation Awards 2004
  • Best Asia Pacific NGP Awards 2004 (2nd Runner Up)

This website has everything you need to know about this organisation. The only downfall is that there are not many ways to reach this organisation. They should have facebook accounts or twitter so that people will know how to contact them easily.

I think that they can do a better job in promoting their organisation so that more people will notice and contribute. But to have a non-profitable organisation winning multiple awards is already impressive enough for me. If more people knows about this organisation im sure they will give them their fullest support. I mean look at those innocent kids suffering and put yourself in their shoes. I know i’ll give everything i can to help.

1) Background of organisation

Who are they?

The national archive of singapore or NAS has been around since 1968. It was first known as the National Archives and Records Centre (NARC). In 1979, with the addition of the Oral History Department, the National Archives was renamed the National Archives and Oral History Department. NAS is an institution under the National Heritage Board, which was instituted in 1993.

What do they do?

They are like the collective storage for the nation for the future generations so they can learn how Singapore came about. NAS manages public records and provides advice to government agencies on records management. From government files, private memoirs, historical maps and photographs to oral history interviews and audio-visual materials, NAS is responsible for the collection, preservation and management of Singapore’s public and private archival records, some of which date back to the early 19th century. NAS also promotes public interest in our nation’s history and heritage through educational programmes and exhibitions.

2) Do they use any Social Media & Web 2.0 technologies for public communication & education?

Yes they do. People can access archives throught the internet via this website that they provided.

This article is focusing mainly on the internet. Its stating that the use of internet does not lead to isolation which many people think would.

In the past not everyone has a laptop or even a computer thus social networking is restrained. Those who have a computer will be sitting at home all day long and they won’t be socially active thus giving people the idea that using the computer will make you isolated or anti-social.

Well that was the past. Now roughly 3 out of 5 people has a personal computer at home. Some might even have more then one. The use of the internet is mainly the reason why people use the computer. A computer without the internet is like a carpenter without his tools. Your use for the computer is very limited without the internet. As how people of the past think of computer and internet as a tool that isolates, people nowadays use it to communicate.

Applications such as MSN, Facebook, Skype etc helps people connect with others who are nearby or far away. Make it casual interaction or for business purposes, people gets more socially involved when they use the computer. Applications such as facebook will also updated the user about current happenings of their friends. This will indirectly make the users closer to their friends as they know more about their lives.

Facebook can also be used for business use. Businessman can make deals and and meet ups easily without a hassle. Facebook is well known throughout the world thus making it possible to spread your business millions of miles away from you. Skype is also another application that enables one to have a conference via webcam. This saves alot of time and make meet ups easy.

the use of the internet

A cartoon that shows the use of internet from all over the world.

These applications are getting more popular as time progresses and technology advances. I predict that in the future everything will be linked to the computer and the internet. People will bring along their laptops to almost everywhere they go. It will soon change from something that they want to something that they need.

Thus i have come to a conclusion that the internet has eased man’s daily workload and also vastly enhances one’s social network instead of isolating them. So if you think that the use of internet are only for people who ‘needs to get a life’, think again.
